Have you ever wished Google was a bit easier to navigate on your desktop or laptop computers? Do you find it annoying to navigate page after page to find the information you’re looking for?
Since adding continuous scroll to its mobile app in 2021, Google has announced that it is now being implemented on its desktop version! In this month’s Vortex Marketing Blog, we will go over what continuous scrolling is, and how it will affect your rankings and how users see your website.
What is Continuous Scrolling?
Continuous scrolling has been used on Google’s mobile app for over a year now, so it isn’t exactly new, but it will be for desktop and laptop users when the update rolls out in the beginning of December.
Instead of Google’s search results displaying the first ten or so websites, then requiring users to click the next page to see more, continuous scrolling will automatically load new websites once a user scrolls to the bottom of the page.
According to Google’s statement to Search Engine Land, “we’re bringing continuous scrolling to desktop so you can continue to see more helpful search results with fewer clicks. It’s now even easier to get inspired with more information at your fingertips.
“Now, when you scroll down you’ll continue to find relevant results so that you can discover new ideas. When you reach the bottom of a search results page, up to six pages of results will be automatically shown until you see a ‘More results’ button if you wish to continue further.”
Similar to one of our core tenants of web design, the more clicks you require users to perform to accomplish their goal, the less compliancy you will see. By eliminating the need to click and navigate to a new page so often, Google is hoping to provide a more seamless experience for its users.
What Does This Mean for Search Rankings?
If you’re wondering how this will affect your website search rankings, experts and Google have provided this very clear answer: maybe!
Users navigate Google and websites differently on mobile compared to desktop, so while the hope is for users to explore further down the Google search results with this update, no one really knows how the average visitor will use this new continuous scroll layout.
As the update rolls out, and more data is gathered, we will update you on any findings and how you should tweak your SEO campaigns to adapt to this new functionality.
